The East Tennessee History Center is one of the two facilities of the Knox County Public Library System in downtown Knoxville, located two blocks from the main library (Lawson McGhee). It houses two KCPL departments, the Knox County Archives and the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection. It also houses the East Tennessee Historical Society, a non-profit agency, and the ETHS's Museum of East Tennessee History. Knox County Archives:Part of the Knox County Public Library system, the purpose of the Knox County Archives is to receive, process, and preserve the non-current, permanent records created by the Knox County, Tennessee government from 1792 to the present. The Knox County Archives provides information on the origins and history of the court systems, court records, genealogy, and history of Knox County, Tennessee. The Archives provides public access to all holdings, with the exception of juvenile records and those restricted by Tennessee laws. It provides local government source material to court officials, genealogists, legal professionals, historians, and the general public. Email inquiries to archives@knoxlib.org. McClung Historical Collection:The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is the local history and genealogy department of the Knox County Public Library System. The McClung Collection is a reference and research collection. None of the books or library materials circulates, and none are available for interlibrary loan. Some notable items in the McClung Collection are: More than 67,000 books, many of which are rare; Thousands of newspapers, most from East Tennessee, predating 1920; More than 3,000 printed genealogies; Approximately 120 linear feet of genealogical manuscript collections that have been processed for research use by the public and more than 13,000 rolls of microfilm of census records, state and local government records, newspapers, and other valuable primary source material.
